There are some things that sound absurd but when you examine the facts that back it up, you then realize that they are actually true. One example of that is the statement that drinking alcoholic red wine can help in decreasing your chances of erectile dysfunction/impotence.
Going by the results of a research study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition drinking red wine and eating foods that contain certain flavonoids can help in decreasing your chances of erectile dysfunction.
It sounds good… you can now drink red wine and know that it has an added health benefits!
The research study was a joint collaboration between the University of East Anglia and Harvard University (both in the USA). It found out that if you want to prevent the issue of erectile dysfunction, following a diet that has a lot of flavonoids in it gives you the same benefit as taking a 40-minutes walk every day.
Prof. Aedin Cassidy (from the University of East Anglia) who is the lead researcher of the study said that they already know that if a man increases his consumption of foods that are rich in flavonoids, it helps in decreasing the risks of medical conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
This research study was the first to get the link between consuming flavonoid regularly and erectile dysfunction which is a sexual problem that afflicts up to 40% of men that are over 40 years.
These helpful flavonoids can be found in so many plant-based drinks and foods like: fruits, red wine, herbs, tea and vegetables. The research study examined six main types of commonly consumed flavonoids and found out that the ones with the highest benefits are: flavanones, flavones and anthocyanins.
The research discovered that the men that ate more foods that are rich in these 3 flavonoids decreased their chances of erectile dysfunction by 10 percent. And don’t think that this means drinking a lot of red wine or eating lots of foods, you just need to consume a few portions per week.
The research also found out that the men with high fruit intake decreased their chances of erectile by up to 14 percent.
The study advises that if you want to lessen your risk more, you should combine exercise with regular consumption of flavonoid rich drinks and foods – this combination can lessen your risk by a staggering 21 percent.
There are some food sources that contain these important flavonoids (flavanones, anthocyanins and flavones) that you should add your everyday diet:
- Red wine (don’t exceed 25 centilitre per day)
