Going by the results of a study, drinking coffee regularly could help in keeping your erection strong and healthy as you grow older.

The research study was done in the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Texas, USA. And the study researchers found out that men who drank 2 – 4 cups of coffee or the equivalent quantity of caffeine in other drinks (e.g. Red Bull and Power Horse energy drinks) have a lower risk of being afflicted with erectile dysfunction.

In the USA where the research study was conducted, 18.4% of males above the age of 20 years have some form of erectile dysfunction. This means that over 18 million American men are battling with erectile dysfunction.

I extracted some important details from the study which was PLOS ONE published some years back:

3,724 males were part of the study which lasted from 2001 to 2004 – all of them were over the age of 20 years.

The men who consumed 1 – 2 cups of coffee daily or the equivalent amount of caffeine which is 85 – 170 mg in other drinks had a 42% reduction in their chances of having erection problems, either in getting it or maintaining it during sex.

The other group of men in the study didn’t drink coffee and had a caffeine consumption of 0 – 7 mg per day.

The study found out that the benefits of coffee drinking were present in both the men that had a healthy body weight and also the men that were obese, overweight and also had high blood pressure. The benefit was present in all the categories of regular coffee drinkers.

There was one exception, the men who had type-2 diabetes did not have any benefits from drinking caffeine – their results were the exception.

The researchers noticed obvious reduction in the prevalence of erectile dysfunction in the men who had high blood pressure, were obese and overweight but they did NOT see the same results in the men that suffer from type-2 diabetes.

The only logical explanation for this is that since one of the strongest risk factors for the presence of erectile dysfunction is type-2 diabetes, it is not shocking to discover that drinking coffee regularly would not provide any benefit to a man that has this disease.

I am sure you must be wondering why caffeine is effective in reducing the occurrence of erectile dysfunction.

The reason is that caffeine is a vasodilator, meaning that it causes the body process that allow the cavernous smooth muscle in the penis and arteries to relax which increase the quantity of blood entering into the penis. And I am sure you are aware that improved blood flow to the penis translates to harder and stronger erections.

Some Facts About Caffeine:

A cup of coffee (25 cl) has on average 95 – 200mg of caffeine

Black tea (e.g. Lipton tea) has 14 – 70mg of caffeine on average in a 25cl cup

A bottle of 35cl pepsi or coca cola has around 27mg of caffeine

Dark brown chocolate has 12mg of caffeine in a 28 grams piece
